About Studio D

David Medcalf – Owner & Creator
Studio D is led by glass artist David Medcalf, the owner and creator behind every piece that leaves the studio. With a lifelong appreciation for craft, colour, and structure, David brings together traditional glass techniques and contemporary design to create work that is both beautiful and purposeful.

In a world of mass production and single-use items, I place strong importance on sustainability and longevity. A well-made piece of glasswork can last generations, carrying both beauty and history forward.

Stained glass is also an important part of our cultural heritage. I am passionate about restoring existing works so they can continue to be enjoyed for another hundred years or more.

I also believe strongly in preserving traditional glass techniques, ensuring these skills remain accessible to future artists, while still embracing innovation and new methods to keep the craft evolving.

Ultimately, my aim is simple: to create objects that bring joy — pieces that reveal something new each time they are seen, whether that’s a shift in light, colour, or shadow.

My Journey into Glass

My journey into glass began with a fascination for how stained glass transforms light into colour, texture, and atmosphere.

I originally worked in mosaics, but soon felt limited by the lack of transparency and wanted my work to interact more fully with light. This led me to a basic glass-cutting course, followed by a 10-week stained glass course — where I quickly became hooked.

Since then, I have trained closely with glass artist Suzanne Rafalini for nearly five years, alongside attending additional specialist courses. I began working with glass in 2022, initially as a hobby, before developing it into a creative practice alongside my full-time career. Since retiring in May 2025, I now dedicate most of my time to Studio D and my commissioned work.

Studio D offers:

  • Bespoke stained glass window design and creation
  • Restoration and refurbishment of traditional stained glass
  • Custom household and garden glass pieces
  • Personalised and custom-made designs

Due to studio space, I currently offer 1-to-1 and 1-to-2 masterclasses, with plans to expand workshops into local venues in mid-2026.
